The abalone farm could be the answer to the world’s abalone shortage problems in the not too distant future. While some may not generally be in support of the concept of an abalone farm because it takes away from the natural, prehistoric mystic of the creature, one must recognize that in many senses the abalone farm is needed nowadays, for one thing because their existence relieves the pressure from natural populations, which have been under siege and effectively destroyed in many areas due to man’s greed and lack of foresight in harvesting practices.
There is another reason why an abalone farm can be helpful to the naturally existing population of abalone, and that is that it helps to provide scientists with a controlled environment in which to study their characteristics so that this information may be used to better understand what affects them positively and negatively. Information gathered from abalone farm studies has already been used to speed up the breeding process of the abalone, and the offspring from such controlled spawnings have been used to repopulate natural habitat. For us, an abalone farm is a great investment, but it can also have a great benefit to the species itself.
